Ashland Chautauqua is proud to be part of the Ashland Historical Society's Speaker Series

Louis Bromfield used his celebrity as a bestselling novelist, critic, and Hollywood screenwriter to advocate for ecology and being one with nature. Learn how, through lectures, newspaper columns, radio, and tours of his Malabar Farm, Bromfield promoted soil conservation and sustainable agriculture and became known as “The Sinatra of the Soil.”

Louis Bromfield's "A Cultivated Friendship" with Edith Wharton

(featuring Scholar Karen Vuranch as Edith Wharton)

6:30 p.m. at The Ronk Lecture Hall (340 Samaritan Avenue in Ashland)

This is located inside the College of Education at Ashland University. Please use Parking Lot C on College Blvd.

Bromfield and Wharton, in spite of the 34-year difference in their ages, bonded in France over their shared love of gardening and writing. The play, A Cultivated Friendship, is adapted from their letters, edited by Daniel Bratton in 2000. Co-writers Anderson and Karen Vuranch will present a staged reading and discuss the play’s evolution.

A casual time for the community to engage in further conversation with Scholar John Dennis Anderson, Learn more about Louis Bromfield, a local Pulitzer Prize-winning author, conservationist, and the owner of Malabar Farm. Also, get better acquainted with Scholar John Dennis Anderson and his knowledge of Bromfield and other historical characters he portrays in Chautauqua-style educational performances.

 

Featured Event: An Evening with Louis Bromfield

6:30 p.m. inside The Barn at Malabar Farm State Park (4050 Bromfield Road in Lucas)

Scholar John Dennis Anderson will give a full performance as Louis Bromfield. After his first-person characterization, there will be a time for Q&A, first as Louis Bromfield and then as Scholar John Dennis Anderson.
